OUR INSTRUCTORS
Gary

After retiring from my "day job" which included positions in Utah, Vietnam, Africa and 20 years in Alaska, my wife Pat and I moved to Sandpoint in 1996. I began teaching skiing at Schweitzer the famous snow year of 1996/97 when the groomers needed to plow under the chairs on the hill for clearance for the chairs. I have been teaching skiing there every year since, through the good and bad snow years.

Seven years ago, a very insightful beginner student of mine stated that there should be a more effective way of teaching skiing than an occasional one hour lesson. From that statement I started the Nice Turns Ski Improvement Program which utilizes a progressive teaching model over 8-12 consecutive weeks, building on previously taught and learned skills. From an original class of 6 students the Nice Turns program has increased to over 100 students with classes most days of the week and ten full time instructors.

My goal as an instructor is to promote the fun and pleasure of skiing while teaching efficiency skills which allow skiers to experience more of our mountain playground and to enjoy the benefits of a healthy winter lifestyle. I am a PSIA Level III Ski Instructor and FFF Certified Flycasting instructor and worked several years in Alaska as a flyfishing guide. My summer passions include rivers and flyfishing and building a log cabin with my wife on the Moyie River.

Even the best skiers in the world have a coach. Join yours at Nice Turns.
