SKI DRILLS

Traverse on one ski
Traverse on your downhill ski while maintaining a carved edge. Concentrate on leg pressure on the front cuff of the boot and a balanced stance with hands in front for balance. A very slight rotation of your upper body towards the downhill will allow enough hip angulation to maintain the carved edge of your ski. Repeat the traverses for both right and left skis.

Add the flexion and extension skills of the previous page to the one ski traverse. Make certain that the flexion and extension happens in the legs (ankle, knee and hip) and not at the waist.

Traverse on one ski in wedge
Traverse on the downhill ski while placing the uphill ski into a wedge position. This will cause a slight rotation of your hip and shoulders towards the downhill. While in the one ski traverse lightly brush the wedged uphill ski across the snow without applying pressure. Repeat the traverses until you are comfortable in your control and stance. Make certain to maintain the wedge position.

One ski traverse to edged turn
While traversing in the wedge position, begin to apply light pressure on the snow to the uphill ski. Increase the pressure until you feel the ski begin to carve into a turn. Transfer your weight progressively to the carving uphill ski and ride the ski into the fall line without rotating or turning your new outside ski. Allow your previous downhill ski to come into a parallel position as you complete the turn across the hill to a stop. Repeat the traverse to edged turn in both directions.
