SKI IMPROVEMENT DRILLS

Carved Traverse

A carved traverse in slow motion. Notice that the skis are tipped onto the uphill edges by an angulation of the hip into the hill which maintains the skiers weight on the inside edge of the downhill ski. Take care not to tip the skis by inclining the body into the hill which would shift your weight towards the uphill ski. Maintain sufficient edge angles with the snow to prevent sidewards sliding of the skis. Note the clean fine tracks left in the snow indicating no sideways slipping.
Increasing hip angulation causes increased ski edge angles with the snow which causes increased pressure on the middle portion of the skis. This in turn creates increased bending of the ski and a resultant shorter turn radius.
