Hockey stops are created by pivoting of the skis across the fall line followed by a quick edging of the skis, stopping downhill travel. Note that the pivoting of the skis is done by a rapid extension of the legs which unweights and flattens the skis against the snow allowing them to pivot across the fall line. The flattened skis are then rapidly brought onto their uphill edges by flexion of the legs and movement of the hip into the hill. To further aid in the stopping of downhill travel, a pole plant is made at the time of the edge set. This helps to stabilize the upper body, especially on steeper slopes.
